ELDERS in Bugerere county in Kayunga district have appealed to President Yoweri Museveni not to support the installation of retired Capt. Baker Kimeze as their cultural leader.

They said Kimeze does not belong to the royal lineage.

In a meeting at Hotel Katikomu in Kayunga on Saturday, the elders said Kimeze’s father, the late Nathan Mpagi, was not installed as Ssaabanyala because he was a Muruuli.

Led by the Bugerere county representative in the Buganda Lukiiko, Ssevume Musoke, the elders said Mpagi had been accused of attempting to extend the Baruuli supremacy to Bugerere, but died a day after his coronation was stopped.

Speaking at the last funeral rites of the late Mpagi at Kyerima in Wabwoko sub-county recently, Museveni backed the planned installation of Kimeze, saying it was a constitutional right.

Ssevume, however, said the Ssaabanyala must originate from the Namuyonjo clan.

He said the elders were in talks with the Buganda government to ensure a true Banyala cultural leader, who will be loyal to the Kabaka is installed.

Ssevume said: “We have 56 tribes in Bugerere and all of them, including the Banyala, practice their culture without any interference from Mengo.”
