THE Buganda Kingdom plans to build a commercial centre at the former Jubilee Park in Katwe.

Work on the six-storey building starts in January. It will be constructed on the 1.64 acre piece of land by a Chinese construction company, Complant Engineering and Trade (U) Limited.

The building is expected to house shops, banks and offices, the Katikkiro, Eng. John Baptist Walusimbi, said.

The centre was named Muganzirwazza in commemoration of the queen mother of Muteesa 1.

The ground-breaking ceremony was conducted on Monday and was officiated by Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi.

Walusimbi said the project was part of a four-year development plan.

He said more projects, including vocational schools, banks, co-operative societies and farm would be initiated to improve the peoples’ welfare.

Walusimbi said he would seek local and international investors to undertake development cooperation. The Buganda land board chairman, Eng. Martin Kasekende, said the projects were meant to keep away land grabbers.

He said they would soon start registering all tenants and landlords on Buganda property.

“We want to get all information to ensure a good relationship between tenants and landlords,” Kasekende said.

Makindye West MP Hussein Kyanjo hailed the project, saying it would send out a clear message that Mengo was not limited to cultural issues. He urged the Kabaka to give some land to traditional medicine men who previously occupied the land.
