Dear Total man,

I have heard that circumcision reduces HIV infection. If this was so, we wouldn’t be having Muslim men getting HIV. Why do they get it?

Dear ST,

Circumcision decreases the chances of a man getting HIV. This has been shown in research studies, one of them done in Uganda. They showed that when groups of circumcised men were compared to uncircumcised men, the chances of getting HIV were more for those who were uncircumcised. But circumcision does not give total protection. It reduces the chances. So, even Muslims who were circumcised soon after birth need to protect themselves. They need to use other means of prevention, for example reducing the number of sexual partners, having protected sex, using condoms, treating any sexually transmitted diseases as soon as they get them, and others.
