The festive season is here once again. Christmas holidays always come with excitement as the year comes to an end and people look forward to the new one.

It is a very busy time as people move in droves from urban localities where they work to their homes in the countryside.

Unfortunately, in the heat of this excitement, many people may lose their lives through reckless behaviour.

Most road accidents recorded during this festive season are a result of speeding and drink-driving.

The end of the year is characterised by excesses which often result in tragedy and grief. People tend to consume too much alcohol which often causes anti-social behaviour which is sometimes fatal. It is ironical that murder and theft are very common crimes during a season when Christians are celebrating the birth of their Lord and Saviour. It is prudent to think of what Christmas really means.

If Jesus Christ has brought salvation in our lives, is this salvation reflected in what we say and do? Sadly, this is not always the case. It is essential that people celebrate sensibly and be mindful of the excesses of the Christmas season. Avoid excessive drinking.

Parents and guardians should particularly pay attention to the whereabouts and activities of the children in their charge. People who travel far away from their homes to celebrate upcountry should ensure that their homes are left with reasonable security. This is when burglars have a field day!

Those travelling in their own cars should ensure that their vehicles are in good condition and fit to do the long journey. Bus companies overload buses in order to make as much money as possible.

Such buses should be avoided.
It is better to miss the celebrations at home if there is no guarantee that you will get there.

It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure the new year finds them in one piece. Merry Christmas.
