THE national football federation was yesterday awarded the auspices of hosting the CECAFA club championship or the Kagame Cup, early next year.

The competition sponsored by Rwandan president Paul Kagame attracts national league champions of the CECAFA member countries.

CECAFA secretary general Nicholas Musonye yesterday confirmed that FUFA president Lawrence Mulindwa made the move to host the tournament, after all the other countries had chickened out due to the expenses involved.

“I can now confirm that it will be Uganda hosting the tournament next year. We are looking forward for another exciting event,” said Musonye after addressing a press conference at Hotel Equatoria.

He was debriefing the press about what had taken place in the CECAFA congress that had taken place at Hotel Equatoria earlier.

Rwandan president Paul Kagame has been offering the cash prizes for the top three teams to a tune of $60,000 (sh115m).

Musonye also announced that Kenya will host next year’s senior challenge cup in November, which will also be sponsored by GTV.

He noted that there was a need of the region to start developing age group competitions, noting that Kenya was the first to come out to host the regional U-17 cup next year.

CECAFA president Loedegar Tenga said that the development of football in the region calls for stability and unity among all stakeholders, saying it was CECAFA’s goal in the next few years.
