Mukisa advocates fish farming

PEOPLE should invest in fish farming to reduce dependence on lakes, the fisheries state minister, Fred Mukisa, has advised.

PEOPLE should invest in fish farming to reduce dependence on lakes, the fisheries state minister, Fred Mukisa, has advised, writes Wilfred Sanya.

He said the Government was working with its counterparts in East Africa to protect the lake, regulate fishing and make it a respectable job.

“We want to come up with laws that will reduce pollution so that the future generation also benefits,” Mukisa said during celebrations to mark the World Fisheries Day at Pearl Garden’s Beach in Kalangala, recently.

He regretted that Uganda, which has been earning more than $100m from fish exports, will get less revenue this year due to over-fishing of immature fish.

Mukisa revealed that all fishing boats on Uganda’s waters would have number plates effective this month in order to curb illegal fishing activities.

He said the system of acquiring the boat number plates would be like that of vehicles.
