THE Madhvani Group of Companies is planning to build a second sugar factory, the general manager of Kakira Sugar Works has revealed.

Richard Orr said the directors were ‘in serious talks’ with the Government regarding the availability of a suitable plot.
Madhvani Group owns Kakira and other high profile investments in East Africa.

“It is true we want to increase sugar production by building another factory,” Orr confirmed.

He, however, didn’t divulge details of the location or cost of the investment, insisting that negotiations with the Government regarding the location of the factory were going on.

“We think the north’s central part has fertile soils and weather favourable for sugarcane growing,” he stated.

Kakira produces 50% of sugar consumed in Uganda. The company produced 93,000 tonnes last year, beating the target of 90,000 tonnes.

Sugar Corporation of Uganda and Kinyara produced 40,000 tonnes (20%) and 66,000 tonnes (30%) in 2006 respectively.

Kakira has already requested the Government to grant it 900 hectares of land in Busoga to expand sugarcane plantations.

Orr said they had presented their request to Janat Mukwaya, the trade minister.

“The minister is aware. We hope talks start and end in a better way,” he said.
This brings a new twist to the ongoing land wrangles between Acholi parliamentarians and the Government.

The MPs are accusing the Government of intending to grab land in the north in a bid to encourage investment in the war-ravaged region.
