RESIDENTS of Kifamba in Rakai district were stunned when a simple gift-giving function turned into a show of wealth.

The function, organised by women and locally referred to as niigina, was for Brig. Elly Kayanja’s mother, Nalongo Leokodia Kayanja.

Kayanja and his siblings from the US and UK graced the function and stunned villagers when, among other things, they gave their mother a RAV4 sport utility car worth sh18m.

They also gave her furniture and animals.

Villagers normally donate items like plates and bed sheets to each other during such functions.

Kayanja is the deputy coordinator of security agencies.

The overjoyed children lifted their mother high, swung her in excitement as they danced to live music of the Eagles Production band.

The mother, overwhelmed by the excitement, almost fainted and was speechless when made to sit in the new car.

After composing herself, she danced several times around the car, holding a portrait of the Virgin Mary.

Kayanja donated sh1.5m to the women’s group.

MPs Kisiki Lubyayi and Matthias Kasamba attended the function.
