66 sub-counties get secondary schools

THE education and sports ministry is about to complete the construction of 66 seed schools.

THE education and sports ministry is about to complete the construction of 66 seed schools, reports Fortunate Ahimbisibwe.

Seed schools are built in areas that lack any secondary school, whether private or government.

There are 75 sub-counties without a secondary school, while 314 have privately owned-schools.

Education permanent secretary Francis Lubanga said yesterday the schools would boost the universal secondary education scheme.

“Our target has been that these schools should be ready by the time the academic year begins in February.”

Lubanga said the construction is funded by the African Development Bank and the Government.

The commissioner for secondary education, Yusuf Nsubuga, said most of the schools are almost ready and each will admit 120 students.

Some of the sub-counties that have benefited are Aja in Apac district, Kabeja in Bukwa, Busaba in Butaleja, Buhanika in Hoima, Dusile in Moyo, Haouyo in Kyenjojo, Ateta in Soroti, Romoji in Yumbe and Rwentondo in Rukungiri.

Others are Pader town council in Pader, Rushoroza in Kanungu, Bukanga in Iganga, Buyobo in Sironko, Namasale in Amolatar, Kibanga in Kapchorwa, Karugu in Bushenyi, Rungo in Busia, Lalogi in Gule, Masya in Isingiro and Ibanda, Kabasinda in Kasese, Kisitira in Kibaale, Kahoma and Kikatsi in Kiruhura.

Nine sub-counties will remain without secondary schools and they include Aberula in Amuria, Ogoko in Arua, Palaro in Gulu, Asamuk in Amuria, Kadepo in Kabong and Jana in Kalangala district.

Nsubuga said the nine would be covered in the next phase.
