NEW Year celebrations in Wobulenzi town, Luweero district, turned miserable when two boys drowned in a pond.

Relatives said they had gone to bathe.

Luweero district police commander Martin Muwanika identified the dead as Frank Seguya and Kayanja.

They were aged 16 and 18 respectively.

He said their bodies were found stuck in the soggy soil at the bottom of the pond.

Muwanika said the pond, which the two victims frequented during their free time, formed after rain water filled up an abandoned stone quarry.

He added: “They could have got stuck and got submerged.”

He said passers-by discovered their bodies the following day after seeing their shirts floating on water.

A post-mortem report by a police pathologist said the two boys died of suffocation (shortage of oxygen).
