THE Government has denied reports that it is selling off the multi-million dollar 13-storeyed Uganda House next to the United Nations headquarters in New York.

“That is not true. It would require the knowledge of the Auditor General, Solicitor general and the government Valuer,” foreign affairs ministry permanent secretary ambassador James Mugume told journalists at the Uganda Media Centre yesterday.

The prime property located on plot 336 East and 45th Street earns uganda at least $100,000 per month. Uganda also owns property in Nairobi, Kinshasa, Cairo, Tripoli, johannesburg, Dar-es-Salaam, Paris, London and Brussels.

“Uganda House is an icon and symbol of Uganda in the world’s leading capital. It is very well placed. It is very conspicuous and is not dilapidated. It is very well maintained. It is not on sale.”

“The building has state-of-the-art conference centres. Many UN organisations are bidding to hold their meetings in our building. Three quarters of the building is occupied by UN organisations. No UN organisation would occupy the building if it was dilapidated,” the permanent secretary to the UN, Francis Butagira, said.

Meanwhile the foreign affairs minister, Sam Kutesa, said the government was “constructing a proactive and forward- looking foreign policy”.

“We have embarked on various initiatives to enhance our competitiveness and sustain our economic dynamism. We believe that foreign policy must reflect the agenda of our people,” Kutesa was quoted as saying in a statement at the foreign affairs ministry management retreat at Jinja Nile Resort.

The retreat was held as a prelude to the annual conference of Uganda’s ambassadors and heads of mission that opened at the ministry headquarters yesterday.

Mugume said the ministry had adopted public diplomacy to interact with the media, civil society and the private sector to enhance investment, trade and tourism.
