ATHLETES Boniface Kiprop and Dorcus Inzikuru are favourites to win the 2006 sports personality of the year award.
The Uganda Sports Press Association nominated the two Commonwealth Games gold medalists among five contenders for the prestigious annual award.
The other three are long distance athlete Moses Kipsiro, rally driver Ronald Sebuguzi and South Africa based footballer David Obua. The winner of the award will be unveiled at the exciting USPA Sportsman of the Year Award dinner in March.
The scribes, led by president Douglas Mazune, also voted the best in the individual sports disciplines yesterday for the annual awards.
Stella Atim (cricket), Beckie Akullo (basketball), Rita Nekesa (T.T) and Sophie Nannyonga (volleyball) beat their male counterparts in their respective disciplines.
Athletics had Kipsiro voted winner after a stiff competition against Kiprop and Inzikuru. Kipsiro won the African championship 10,000m gold.
New national golf champion Steven Birungi scooped the golf award despite not winning the prestigious Uganda Open.
Egyptian based star footballer Geoffrey Massa, who scored two goals in Cranes Nations Cup game against Lesotho, beat Obua to the football player of the year honours after a tight vote by the scribes at Lugogo club house.
Edwin Ekiring (badminton), John Bosco Sebabi (weightlifting), Asuman Gesa (cycling), Ronald Kalete (darts) and Asaf Natan (motor cycling) were unopposed.
