THE National Fisheries Resource Research institute is to construct a modern boat landing structure in Jinja.
The director, Dr. John Balirwa, said this at the end-of-year staff party at the institute guest house on Friday.
He said they would work with Jinja municipal council to construct the modern pier, adding that the project will be funded by the European Union.
“The pier will be open to the public. Large boats will be using it and this will increase revenue collection for the municipal council,†Balirwa added.
He said the pier will boost trade and the fishing business on the shores of Lake Victoria, adding that it will help Jinja to revamp its past glory.
Balirwa also revealed that the Aqua culture centre in Kajjansi would be refurbished.
He said this will improve on the fish farming methods and enhance the improvement of capture fisheries research systems on all the lakes.
Jinja mayor Mohammed Baswali Kezala appealed to researchers to open up working relations with other sectors to enable them get more knowledge and professionalise their research work.
