AIRLINE giants SN Brussels have offered to transport stranded Olympian Patrick Etolu from Soroti to Kampala to meet Olympic head Jacques Rogge.

The offer comes after The New Vision revealed yesterday that high-jumper Etolu, one of the Ugandan heroes at the 1956 Olympics, lacked transport money to attend Rogge’s historic visit tomorrow.

“They have offered a car to transport him,” said UOC president Maj. Gen. Francis Nyangweso yesterday.

Etolu arrives in Kampala today. Etolu, 72, said on Monday that he could notmake the trip because of lack of funds.

“It’s been sorted out. He will be in Kampala at 1pm,” said the organisers.

Nyangweso said other Olympians on the invitation list who are upcountry will have their transport costs refunded.

Among the famous Olympians who will meet Rogges are 1968 and 1972 medalist Leo Rwabwogo, 1996 bronze medalist Davis Kamoga, Mary Musoke, Boniface Kiprop, Margaret Tumusiime, Tom Kawere, Grace Seruwagi, Irene Ajambo and Patrick Lihanda.

Asked why athletes like Charles Lubulwa who participated at a record three Olympics were missing on the list, Nyangweso explained that emphasis was on the older generation.

“We want the old ones to have this chance before they disappear. The young ones will have another opportunity,” promised Nyangweso.
Rogge arrives at Entebbe at midday on a two-day working visit that will see him meet all local sports stakeholders.

UOC secretary Gabriel Oloka described the preparations as smooth. The organising committee will have its last meeting today at Serena Hotel.
