EAST Coast Boxing Club is determined to keep Kampala suburb — Naguru’s tradition of being Uganda’s heart of boxing.

After taking over from another Naguru side, KCC, as one of the leading clubs, the East Coast is now in advanced stages of completing a new gym.

The club’s managers Hussein Khalil, Hassan Khalil and a Belgian Pascal Bogaert recently collected sh5m in a joint fundraising drive with the International School of Uganda.

Construction has reached ring beam. “We will be very grateful if well-wishers help us raise sh4.8m for roofing, cementing the floor and other finishings,” said Hassan and Bogaert.

The officials were full of thanks for SN Brussels, Transami, Kampala Central chairman Godfrey Nyakaana, Ceres Juice, Miss Gray, Kampala International School teacher Przekurat and the school’s students for the December fundraising.

The club, located on Naguru Katale hill, has been operating in a small dingy room. “We have over 80 talented boxers and therefore need a bigger hall,” noted Khalil.

The Naguru Community Centre, in the heart of Naguru and Nakawa housing estates, was for three decades the factory that produced big names.

Former world champion John ‘The Beast” Mugabi, national coach Dick Katende and 1980, ‘84 and ‘88 Olympian Charles Lubuulwa are some of the stars groomed in the centre now being revived.
