With the increasing malaria cases, sleeping under a mosquito net is the best way to prevent mosquito bites. However, there are a number of facts one should keep in mind when buying a mosquito net.
First, consider the size of the mosquito net compared to the bed. While its mesh size should be large enough to allow enough air circulation, it should also be as small as possible to keep out the mosquitoes.
Agnes Nankebe, a sales executive with Trio Enterprises on Luwum Street, says: “Frequent travellers can acquire polyester mosquito nets, which are lightweight and long-lasting. These are available in different mesh sizes and thread thickness.â€
Mosquito net brands include Smartnet, Permanet and Coopernet. They also come in different shapes.
Rectangular nets offer more room around the person as opposed to the slanted sides of a tent or pyramid-shaped net. It is much more efficient to purchase a net that has already been dipped or sprayed with a high quality insecticide such as permethrin.
Such nets are pre-treated at the manufacturing plant and can last up to a year depending on the amount of exposure to sunshine.
The untreated nets ought to be treated every three months. Their prices ranges from sh5,000 to sh30,000 depending on the location of the shop and the quality.
