If man has always grappled with the origins of phenomenon, with the result of coining so much lore (like the biblical creation stories), Jean Nakacwa begins her playwrighting career in the same vein.
Kaawa is a “what goes around comes around†play about a rapist, Balunaba (Fred Kigula), who later meets his victims and tortures some of them to death. Nakacwa grapples with the question of where this bad heartedness, the hurting of one another and rape comes from.
A popular playwright, she has given the Bakayimbira an unusually mind-teasing play. It is tense and pensive after years of screaming that had become the mark of the group. Full of twists, it remains open-ended, but signs off on a good note when the good Clive (Charles Ssenkubuge), after years of being a foster father of many children) discovers he is also a biological father.
When the tension is running high, Ssenkubuge’s antics become destructive. Nakacwa (as Tonia) and Faridah Ndausi (as Sonia) make perfect twins. And that adds a shock effect when it is revealed that the two are not real sisters. But save for the remarkable performance of Rebecca Namakula, most of the actors will hardly be missed in case of a change in the cast.
