Floral sofa chairs are back

IN the world of interior designing, there is nothing like a design is history, so it should be swept under the carpet and forgotten. History usually repeats itself, but taking a better form to blend with the modern homes, writes harriet Birungi.

People who were around in the 1970s, may remember that the luxurious floral arm chair-seats with springs were what constituted most people’s sitting rooms. Only to be replaced by simple one colour arm chairs in the 1990s. Until recently, this simplicity was diminishing, but the easy to furnish floral sofas are finding their way back into homes.

John Biryarama of Turquaz Home Decoration in Kampala, says the return of the 70s is due to the desire of luxury and easy to furnish houses.

“Using sofas with patterns is meant to try and capture the various col

ours used on a house without going away from your colour scheme,” explains Biryarama.

He also adds that depending on what colours one wants for sofas, there are a variety of fabrics to choose from. The fabrics include velvets, sheep skin and bright patterned cotton among many.

Azize Ozturk, an interior designer adds that the patterned sofas are loved because they are decorative. With such sofas in the home, using chair coverings is rendered irrelevant. Their beauty speaks volumes. They are an attraction to have in the home as compared to the single-colour sofas that need a lot of enhancements.

“The secret is in choosing the fabric whose patterns bring a lovely colour scheme – a fabric whose colours blend with the curtains, floor and paint,” Ozturk advises. Adding that: “One colour can be picked as a guide when looking for curtains.”

The different pattern sofas are making a come back because they give room for variety other than limited choice of colour, which make furnishing easy.

“With such kind of seats one can easily match them with any furnishing accessory in the sitting room,” comments Macklen Mbabazi of Fancy Furniture. They can match with carpets and centre rugs without a lot of contrast.

“If you are not into using of accessories, patterned chairs perfectly stand on their own. All they need is a coffee table and one will sink into luxury with modern day floral and patterned blend of sofas,” says Mbabazi.

The price of such sofas fluctuates between sh1.4m to sh4m a set in a number of showrooms.
