Watch out! Incest could be at home

A BELOVED fan wants to know whether men can actually get aroused by their daughters or sisters. That is an excellent question, Joan, and I intend to answer it just as soon as I have written enough words to make a column.

Incest is sexual activity between close relatives. I have no good words for it and neither should you. In football terms, it is an own goal in the dying minutes of a crucial game. It is also a criminal offense and an impediment to marriage in most countries, religions and cultures.

You just can’t wake up naked one morning and in your daughter’s bed. But some people have.

One Emmanuel Matindo, 46, of Kalerwe turned his 19-year-old daughter into a wife the whole of last year, claiming religious convictions, which did not impress Magistrate Margaret Tibulya. She advised him to cool down in prison for seven years.

But have you ever imagined that the incest dragon could be taking shelter within your very home? God forbid! But a 2004 national household survey on adolescent sexual and reproductive behaviour revealed that 16% of girls, 12 — 14, who had had their first sex, it was with a relative. Adolescents were asked which relative was responsible and girls ranked uncles, stepdads, brother and real father in that order of danger. Boys said the aunt was the most seductive, followed by a sister. No boy pointed at a mother and for that, the Lord be praised.

Unfortunately, when the hangman’s noose comes out, culprits of these incestuous activities smile away because there is no net that scoops the dark corners of our houses where they operate. So, the noose has to wait for the Matindos who get stupid enough to marry in broad daylight and bear children.

We need to play detective to protect our daughters. Don’t assume that because the children under your care are relatives, the lion can sleep with the lamb as the Bible says. Get suspicious of uncles and aunties who gain strange popularity or notoriety among your kids.

The cross most urban families must bear is the wall fence and gate. We lock our children in and they can only get out when accompanying us out. Daughters become adults and feel the excitement of beating the boarding school or home prison. So, when Uncle Matindo, their agemate, is staying for a weekend, you are risking Kayiira’s death and you will never see the report.

And now, Joan, the answer to your question is simple; Yes. Arousal is a complex process that is triggered off by varied stimuli. True, the object can arouse a man, but so can an imagination, curiosity, anticipation, recollection, anything and nothing.

Yes, nothing! You can be approaching the altar for Holy Communion and suddenly you feel the sun rising. It cannot be the priest, nor the holy host. In that humbled pure self, it cannot be temptation. It can only be nothing.

So, do not trust anybody with your anything. Or anything with your anybody.
