THE National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has warned close to 1,000 occupants of wetlands in Kashambya sub county, Rukiga, in Kabale, to use them properly in order to sustain the Kisizi falls, where a small power dam has been constructed.

NEMA explained that the wetland system there forms the catchment and reservoir for the river that forms Kisizi Falls. Power generated by the falls supplies Kisizi Hospital. The dam and is due for expansion.

Kisizi is the main Government hospital in Rukungiri.

Because of overpopulation and land shortage, parts of Rushoma-Kanyabaha and Kalimbanya-Nyakasa wetlands are being degraded through agriculture and dairy farming.
