THE term woodworm is used for the destructive larvae of species of wood-boring beetle. One of the signs of woodworm is the appearance of neat round holes in wood, often accompanied by piles of wood dust.
The grown-up furniture beetle is a small brown insect about 5mm long. The insect can fly and lay eggs on rough wood surfaces. The worms are usually introduced into the house in second-hand furniture, but they can also fly in through windows from nearby dead trees.
Control measure In furniture, woodworm can be cured by application of a woodworm sprays like Boracare or Borasol. One can also apply an insecticide polish as a precaution against the pest.
