THE Government should increase its budget for higher education, state minister for higher education Gabriel Opio, has said.

“In 1980 the rate of return of investment in primary education was higher than that for higher education. But our development partners like the IMF and the World Bank are saying the current rate of return in higher education is higher than at at lower levels.

“The Government and the Ministry of Education and Sports should orient their thinking so that more resources are allocated to higher education,” he said.

Opio was speaking at the 5th graduation ceremony of Namasagali University in Bugembe, Jinja district last Friday. A total of 216 students were awarded certificates, diplomas and degrees in various fields.

Earlier, the chancellor, Henry Wako Muloki, urged the Government to consider aiding the university, which he said, was short of funds.
