I SAY SO

UGANDA Sports Press Association’s sponsorship deal with uganda telecom is a big boost.

Uganda’s most organised body of journalists has been struggling since philanthropist Michael Ezra ceased financing it.

One of the beauties of the offer, is that like in Ezra’s case, USPA will be dealing with one financier.

It can be frustrating running around for a “sponsor” for chapati then another for beer and yet another for sodas – as some USPA galas proved.

Before Ezra came in to individually foot USPA’s bills, I saw colleagues literally walk their soles off as they oscillated between long lists of one-item financiers.
The emergence of uganda telecom should therefore be a big relief.

The telecommunication company, in a 12-month renewable deal, rubbed away any emerging uncertainties on whether the prestigious annual gala would be staged.

It’s now official the event will be held next month with uganda telecom as its exclusive sponsor.

The journalists and the sponsors have, in a new innovation, made the package vibrant with monthly ceremonies to award sportsmen.

Credit should also go to Douglas Mazune’s executive for properly packaging their request.

Of course, the offer also has a lot to do with USPA’s credibility.

Expect explosive battles in the National Open boxing championship following introduction of cash prizes.

If merely trophies have previously driven our pugilists into some superb shows, what do you expect from the boxers when a sh0.2m winners’ prize is dangling before them?

To ensure that the boxers put up big fights, even spectators are being paid. The first women at Lugogo will be earn prizes on top of raffle cash.

But isn’t it also time we looked beyond boxing boss Roger Ddungu’s generosity.
Are his ever increasing offers because of his genuine love for the sport, or is it a case of winning public sympathy given the Justin Juuko factor? Juuko dragged Ddungu to court after his failed presidential bid.

It would therefore be interesting to see Ddungu’s administration without such opposition.

But maybe we need not be so inquisitive more so now when boxing is the biggest beneficiary.
