THE question of Jinja becoming a city should not be politicised, the Kyabazinga has advised.

Henry Wako Muloki revealed that he supported the view of making the town a city but added that interest should be on development.

“Jinja surely deserves a city status. It is not a political but developmental issue that all stakeholders should support,” he told leaders during a consultative meeting at Nakabango village, Mafubira sub-county in Jinja district on Thursday.

He urged the Basoga to back the bid because the municipality’s elevation would benefit neighbouring towns and districts.

The Kyabazinga asked the Government to revisit the requirement that a town must have a population of 500,000 people before it gets a city status.

Jinja mayor Baswale Kezaala noted that Jinja city would help reduce the pressure on Kampala.

“Kampala is about to burst and when it does, the fragments will spill to Jinja. We need to prepare for this,” he said.
energy and industrial development minister Daudi Migereko attended.
