IN a bid to rid itself of slums, the municipality demolished Kitoro market and has put aside sh3.5b for the construction of a new and modern market.

“I am against people who set up unplanned structures that lead to slums. Such areas are characterised by high criminal rates and diseases,” said the Mayor, Stephen Kabuye, recently.

The Town clerk, Joseph Kimbowa, explained that the first Phase of the two-storeyed market will take one and half years to build. It will accommodate over 250 vendors. He said funds will be provided by the municipality and vendors.

“The market has out-lived its age, having been in place since the 1940s. It had no proper plan, hence turning the place into a slum -like area” Kimbowa said.

After the market’s demolition, many traders have been absorbed by small kiosks at Kitoro Taxi Park where business is booming.

Others have relocated to Kitoro Community Centre grounds where the municipality constructed temporally stalls at a cost of sh150,000 each. Some traders refused to pay, complaining that the fee was to high. They ended up joining Nakiwogo landing site market or Lunyo market.

Kabuye explained that the 7th Parliament had recognised the contribution of the municipality leadership and passed a resolution to elevate the municipality to city status. “The council will soon commission a team of experts to draw up a master plan for the future city,” the mayor said.

He appealed to residents to cooperate with the experts when time comes in order to attain the prestigious city status.
