The national taxi operators’ association has set new fares for city and upcountry routes.

Most of the fares at the stages within Kampala and its suburbs have been lowered, while upcountry ones have maintained their previous rates.

The list, which was released yesterday evening by Christopher Sengooba, the UTODA vice-chairman in charge of administration, has 116 stages.

Other stages that do not feature will have their rates released by Monday, John Ndyomugyenyi, UTODA’s national chairman, said.

Taxi drivers who overcharge passengers will be penalised and the public has been asked to report such cases on 077-2-480883 or 235692.

UTODA has deployed supervisors to ensure that the charges are complied with. The charges will be displayed at every stage in the taxi parks.

Taxis plying Jinja road, Kansanga, Kasubi and Ndeeba will charge sh500. Kaleerwe, Mulago, Ntinda, Makindye, Kamwokya, Mengo, Bwaise, Namasuba and Kabuusu must charge sh600.

Gayaza, Kyengera, kawanda, Nansana, Kajjansi, Lweeza, Bulenga, Ngaando, Bbila are at sh1,000, while Kawempe, Ndejje, Kisaasi, Maganjo, Mutungo Bbina, Mutundwe and Seguku are at sh800.

Mukono, Matugga, Kawuku are at sh1,300, while Masaka, Mubende, Kiboga, Bugili, Gomba, Baracks, Kabulasokke and Kifampa will charge sh6,000.

Rakai border, Hoima, Masindi and Kigumba are at sh10,000 while Mbarara and Bujuuko/Lugala are to charge sh12,000.

Nakasongola, Kasaga, Ng’ondo/Gomba is sh5,000 while Gulu is sh15,000 and Fort portal will charge sh11,000 and Kyotera and Nngoma are at sh7,000.

Mpereerwe, Luzira, Muyenga, Ggaba, Busega/Lungujja, Ntinda, Namungoona, nalukolongo, Wakaliga and Masanafu passengers will pay sh700.
