To the rest of the world the film, The Last King of Scotland, is about Forest Whitaker, Kerry Washington and James McAvoy. And of course, the director Kevin McDonald, who admittedly has made a movie very different from other ‘African movies.’

But to many Ugandans, it is the time they were immortalised in celluloid.

How many of us can say they appeared in a Hollywood film?

Abbey Mukiibi for one, and he was brilliant in his portrayal of Masanga, Amin’s chief of security.

Stephen Rwangyezi had a quiet, but very visible time as the Minister of Health, Jonah Wasswa.

Michael Wawuyo acts as Air Force commander and gets to say a few words, but I must admit I missed identifying him when I saw the film, and he is a friend of mine. Is Dr. Stockley a Ugandan? Whatever, he played a Times journalist, as did Andy Williams, who together with Stockley, are ardent members of the Kampala Amateur Dramatic Society.

But a lot more of our local personalities also appeared in the movie as extras but did not get any billing (and there were hundreds).

Actor and playwright Joanita Bewulira-Wandera, had two seconds as Mrs. Malyamu Amin; the Obsession’s Cleo Koheirwe got to put on a coy look as Joy, a girl offered by Amin to Nicholas Garrigan for the night, but who rejects her and instead picks on Kay Amin. African Woman’s Brenda Nanyonjo, gets to stand there doing nothing, but of course her name appears later in the credits as costume’s assistant.

Bewulira-Wandera is also listed as head of casting in Uganda, assisted by Irene Kintu, Consodyne Buzabo and Joanita’s sister, Kaya Kagimu Mukasa. Andy Williams is also a casting consultant.

The Afrigo Band is centre stage and everyone will see the ageless Moses Matovu playing his saxophone in the song Kasongo. Angela Kalule also gets to sing for more than a few minutes. The Ndere Troupe and Nyonza Singers also appear.

There were journalists, mainly from The New Vision, who will see themselves on screen but for a few seconds. You will not miss Wilson Sanya taking pictures, while Alex Balimwikungu is seen hysterically clapping his hands at everything Amin said.

There is a special thanks (and this runs on screen) to John Nagenda, Habib Kagimu, Colonel Leopold Kyanda, Dr. Nsaba Buturo, Natasha Museveni, William Pike, John & Lesley Magnay, Mario Zvan, Simon Channing Williams, Mahendra Mehta, Dana Shangereyeva, Anthony Rowel, Paul Webster and Jackie Lwanga.

Does appearing in a major money film make one a celebrity? If it does, we bring you the the complete list of Uganda’s new celebrities as they appear.
