WE were struck by her voice and charisma when she set out with a smash hit, Nubian Queen. Somewhere along the way, Dorothy Bukirwa disappeared into oblivion. Most of us were quick to write her off as a one-hit wonder. We were wrong! Three years later, Bukirwa is back!

“I wanted to first complete my bachelors degree at Makerere University and find some time to reinvent myself,” Bukirwa says in defence of her three-year lull. 2007 seems to be looking up for her. The gorgeous singer returns to the charts with yet another impressive R&B single, titled, Stranger.

The song is a fitting comeback effort. Its melody is impressive and the production remarkable. Like all her previous material, this one was also produced by Steve Jean at Fenon Records, while the writing is credited to Kesie.

Stranger is a mid-tempo dance groove pulsating with enticing lyrics. In the song, Bukirwa discusses the dangers of falling in love with a stranger. It’s well-written, the production is virtually flawless and her vocal delivery is no less impressive than in Nubian Queen. Whichever way you look at it, Stranger demonstrates how far this princess of local R&B has come of age.

The song, which also features vocals by Kesie, recently hit the number one spot on ‘East Africa’s Finest’, a highly-competitive regional chart show hosted by Big Ben on Sanyu FM. The video of the song is also playing on most local TV stations, and this track will soon be playing on radio stations.

With Nubian Queen, Bukirwa won a PAM Award for Best R&B Single at the inaugural awards gala at Speak Resort, Munyonyo in 2003. So, what remains to be seen is whether Stranger also transfers well to the big stage.

But Bukirwa is not waiting around to find out. Taking no chances, the singer has emulated her local R&B counterparts by recording a song in Luganda. The song, titled Nkwagala, features production talents of Steve Jean and has bass-heavy grooves designed for dancing.

And if everything goes as planned, Bukirwa will be releasing an album later this year. This, according to the singer, will be a compilation of her old songs like Nubian Queen and Friday as well as her latest ones.
