OVER fifteen parents in Rakai had to be imprisoned before they could accept to take their children to school.
The assistant chief administrative officer in-charge of Kakuuto county, Jamil Kabiito, told The New Vision recently that the arrested parents were sending their children to work in other people’s gardens for money.
He revealed that after spending a night in Kifamba sub-county cells, they finally agreed to send their children to school. “They wrote an agreement confirming that they would take their children to school.â€
Kabiito said they were not fined but added that those who will be arrested again would face tougher punishment. He observed that the parents would negotiate with the owners of the gardens and after the children had worked for the whole day, they (parents) would come and collect the money.
Kabiito named the most notorious parents as those from the hills of Nabbunga and Lwemisege. These, he said, prefer to send their children to fish and hunt, besides the manual labour.
“I have instructed the heads of schools and their teachers to compile lists of children who miss classes. I will use them to arrest the parents.â€
He said the sub-county chiefs and LC officials would also participate in the crackdown, especially on market days, where pupils leave school and turn to hawking.
