MAKERERE University is set to demolish structures which were illegally erected on its land in Katanga, the university secretary, Sam Akorimo, has revealed.

Hostels and shops are among the illegal buildings.

Akorimo said the university sued the encroachers last year and the court ruled in its favour.

“We are going to secure another court order to raze all structures that were illegally constructed on the university land,” Akorimo, who did not specify when the demolition would take place, said on Friday.

Appearing before the parliamentary public accounts committee to answer queries raised in the Auditor General’s report, Akorimo explained that the land is adjacent to the Ministry of Public Service headquarters in Wandegeya, Kampala.

He noted that three quarters of the university land in Katanga had been encroached on.

The institution owns 30 acres of land in Katanga.
