Eleven people died and 15 others were seriously injured in a road accident yesterday morning when a Fuso lorry heading for South Sudan overturned in Masindi district.

Nine died on the spot while two others breathed their last on the way to Kiryandongo hospital as they were being rushed there following the accident at Kibanja on the Kampala-Gulu highway.

Police spokesman Edward Ochom said the accident occurred when the lorry, heavily loaded with merchandise including beer and soda, burst a tyre.

“One of the front tyres of the lorry burst, causing it to overturn,” Ochom said.

Only four of the dead had been identified by press time. They included Joseph Lubega of Kyengera, Robert Ssentongo, Fred Katabazi and Frank Mwanje. All the bodies were transferred to Kiryandongo hospital.

The Police identified the injured as Moses Kalwana of Lungujja, Suleiman Mubiru of Ndege, Yusuf Kase, 20, Moses Kabanda, Jamada Ssekandi and Didas Byamukama.
Others were Christopher Katende, a student of Busitema National College, Akim Iga of Zana and Paul Kavuma.

Two other survivors Gertrude Namukambwa, 33, of Kawanda and Yusuf Kizamba, who The New Vision found at the scene of accident, said there were 23 people heading to Juba.

The accident brings the total number of fatal crashes involving buses and trucks to seven in one month, killing 83 people.

About 10 days ago, a taxi collided with a Rwanda-bound trailer on the Kampala-Masaka road, killing over 18 people.

Last week, the Government started enforcing the installation of speed governors for all passenger vehicles in a bid to reduce the road carnage.

The speed governors, limiting speed to 80km per hour, led to a shortage of buses and taxis this week as not every vehicle owner had complied with the new regulation.

The new traffic policy also led to a hike in fares to many destinations as drivers argued that they spend longer hours on the road.
