Kampala is one big workshop

SIR — Before 1990, Kampala was a lavish city, but now, it is more of a workshop than a city. Those who have travelled outside Uganda can bare witness that city structures out there are far better and easier to manoeuvre around than in Kampala.

Some of the structures in Kampala, like the Parliament Building, still have bullet holes from the 1986 coup and Radio Uganda seriously needs a make-over.

Instead of beautifying the city with many shopping malls that sell the same things (shoes, mobile phones and clothes), why can’t there be more ‘green parks’ like Centenary Park.

These should be distributed all over the city. For example, one should be near Clock Tower and another in front of Uganda Railways. What happened to the proposed park which was to be built in front of Spear Motors, Nakawa?

Kampala was not properly planned. Towns like Jinja and Mbale are better. In Kampala, wherever a stream is exposed, a car wash appears. I know it is a form of employment but the environment is affected.

Why doesn’t National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) or the environment ministry do something about this?

Can’t the owners of these washing bays have well-designed structures with proper drainage systems leading back into the streams?
Many organisations are focusing on CHOGM and how to make quick money. What will happen after CHOGM ends?

Even the proposed buses cannot be mentioned this year because the MPs are busy pushing for their cars. With more taxis in the city, many shopping malls, garages and mini taxi parks on the outskirts of town, Kampala is just a workshop.
