AUTHORITIES in DR Congo have confirmed the continued presence of the Allied democratic Front (ADF) and the National Army for the liberation of Uganda (NALU) rebels in their country.

This was revealed during a joint cross-border security and trade meeting between Ugandan and Congolese military, intelligence and political leaders at Cafetairia Hotel on the Uganda-Congo border last week.

The meeting was a follow-up of the bi-lateral peace initiatives, which President Yoweri Museveni and his DRC counterpart Joseph Kabila launched last year.

The Congolese leaders said the rebels were using lots of dollars to hide within their community.

Jean Jacques Rousseau Kapele, the leader of the Congolese delegation, vowed to flush out Uganda’s enemies from their territory.

The two sides agreed to strengthen ties aimed at improving border security and trade.

Wilson isingoma, the leader of the Ugandan team, urged the Congolese to cooperate so that peace is maintained at the border.

Isingoma, who is also Kasese resident district commissioner, called for regular sharing of information to stem any incidents that could jeopardise peace in the two countries.

He, however, said Uganda was concerned about the continued depletion of lakes by the Congolese using illegal fishing gear on lakes Edward and Albert. He called for conservation and protection of the two lakes.

Bundibugyo resident district commissioner Samuel Kazinga warned that lack of cooperation in conserving the two lakes could result in a future conflict.
