OVER sh70m in cash and pledges was raised on Sunday for the repair of Rubaga Cathedral, reports Joyce Namutebi.

The chairperson of the steering committee, Dr. JM Sseremba, said sh600m was needed for the repairs and that sh289m had been raised.

The Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, who launched the fundraising drive, contributed sh10m and commended Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, for the innovation and urged Christians to contribute.

Bukenya also hailed the missionaries who introduced Christianity in Africa and thanked Caritas, a charity, for supporting displaced persons in the north.

Lwanga last Monday at a mass organised by the Ggaba Beach manager, Limited Kiwanuka, stated that the cathedral was one of the sites expected to be visited by the Commonwealth Heads of State.

The church was last repaired in 1992 for Pope John Paul II’s visit. Current repairs will include fixing the leaking roof and cracked verandah, painting and buying a carpet.

The initiative is called Ssabasumba Annual Appeal Fund. Lwanga revealed that he got the idea from a diocese in New Jersey, USA. “Its purpose is to make people own the church,” he said. He stressed that the fund does not eliminate the tithe (a tenth of a Christian’s earnings).

Retired Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala, Fr. Achilles Mayanja and ministers Jachan Omach, Kagimu kiwanuka, Prof. Ssemakula Kiwanuka, matia Kasaija and Serapio Rukundo attended the function in the cathedral’s parking yard.
