A subwoofer is a speaker that is designed to reproduce bass frequencies (usually those between 20 Hz and 125 Hz). These speakers tend to be large and require more power to operate than their small speaker counterparts. A subwoofer provides the powerful audio rumble or punch commonly used in movies and music shows. They are usually installed in cars or connected to home theatres.

In either application, the subwoofer is not considered a stand-alone device, but helps to fortify the higher pitched sound produced from the speakers. Subwoofers are popular due to their ability to pack a large, low-frequency sound in a small space.

The quality of a subwoofer depends mainly on its components. Each material provides a slightly different effect or sound.

Different types and sizes of subwoofer boxes exist and each gives a different sound effect and volume. Several home theatres come with a subwoofer that matches the speakers and amplifiers. In this case, you will not go through the hustle of buying a subwoofer. When purchasing a subwoofer to add to your home system or car audio setup, find out wether it is mounted or unmounted?

Unmounted subwoofers are in their basic form - not yet ready to be used, while mounted ones are already installed in a box. Pre-enclosed subwoofers save the user the hassle of matching the box to the subwoofer and installation.

On the other hand, unmounted subwoofers allow the experienced consumer to customise their setup by picking a box to fit their installation needs and sound preferences. For example, some people enjoy more subwoofer bass when watching DVDs, so one needs to turn up the subwoofers volume for DVDs, then crank it down when playing music.

The goal is to have the deepest, most powerful bass, without overpowering your main speakers.

Remember, the spot where to place your subwoofer can make or break your bass. Placing the subwoofer in a corner will yield the most bass. You can also place it behind, on the sides or in front of the speakers.

Since most subwoofers come with at least four to five speakers, it is easy to have them distributed around the house for the sound appeal.

When bought from a reputable outlet and preferably under brand names of Sony, Samsung, Toshiba and Panasonic; subwoofers are purchased with connection wires to simplify the ability to spread them around.
