SIMBA Football Club has delayed the February salaries for their players and coaches due to the team’s poor performance in the Super League.
Team manager Ibrahim Kaigwa confirmed the decision yesterday saying that Uganda Peoples Defence Forces headquarters, that pays over 30 staff at the club, was demanding positive results before the money can be released.
“We are trying to lift their spirits but they will be paid. There is no reason to worry, this is an institution which is demanding results,†Kaigwa said yesterday.
Simba FC players earn between sh0.1m and sh0.25m monthly salary each alongside food ration allowances from the army headquarters in Bombo. The army also pays rent for players who live outside the barracks.
While receiving sponsorship for the team from Total (Uganda) Limited early this year, club patron Lt. Gen. Katumba Wamala warned both the players and coaches against any excuses for poor performance.
Simba’s poor form recently has seen the team lose to Kinyara, Kampala City Council, Police, Uganda Revenue Authority and most recently City Lads within just a month.
The team has since slipped to sixth place on the table as the super league goes into recess.
Coach Moses Basena denied that the poor form was due to disagreements between him and players pushing for his exit.
Another club official revealed over the weekend that key players had lost allegiance to Basena over his tactics and are said to have reported him to higher club authorities.
The official who did not want to be named said that the players were intentionally putting up a poor show to infuriate Wamala and force Basena’s sacking.
Germany trained Basena said: “It is true we always get more chances than our opponents but I have no disagreements with players. It is just a case of poor finishing.â€
Basena’s team has managed seven wins, four draws and five losses.
