THE $90m (sh158.4b) Kampala Hilton Hotel will be ready for the Commonwealth meeting slated for November, the chairman of the Aya Group, Mohamed Hamid, has said, writes Fortunate Ahimbisibwe.

Hamid said this during a tour of the hotel’s construction site. Aya Group are the hotel’s proprietors.

He told the economic monitoring state minister, Kagimu Kiwanuka, that new construction technology was going to be imported from Germany. “Once this technology is here, we shall move fast. It takes about three months to bring it,” Hamid said.

He added: “We do not want to rush and put up a building which will collapse. We prefer to do quality.”

Kagimu said: “Take your time and do a good job. We do not want another Bwebajja incident. Even if it’s after the Commonwealth meeting, we need this hotel.” At Bwebajja on Entebbe Road, a hotel under construction collapsed.

Hamid said: “If our technical team finds it difficult to get the hotel ready by November, the longest we can go is March 2008.”
