ALL vehicles moving in and out of the Makerere University main campus are to pay sh500 daily.
The fee, which takes effect on April 1, is part of a plan to improve the flow of traffic at the 85-year-old institution, a source said.
A similar plan introduced by the university in 2005, was rejected by the students and taxi drivers. With the new plan, vehicles will pay sh500 as they leave the university. This is similar to the Mulago Hospital arrangement.
“The money will help us renovate roads and improve the drainage system,†a source explained. Vehicles belonging to members of staff will be exempted from the fee.
“The institution is planning on how to handle some groups like the taxi drivers and hostel owners. We have discussed with them,†the source explained. Special consideration will be given to vehicles that enter and leave the university each day.â€
A private firm, Equator Touring Services, will work with the Estates department to implement the project.
The New Vision learnt that 35 locations had been set aside for construction of parking yards. This is in addition to passenger shelters and parking centres for hostel vans.
Vehicles are diverted to other roads within the campus to avoid noise pollution during lectures.
