MPS yesterday started investigations into allegations that People’s Redemption Army (PRA) suspects were forced to apply for amnesty.

Six PRA suspects petitioned Parliament on February 19 claiming that the State was coercing them into applying for amnesty as the only way to get out of prison.

Rubaga north MP Beti Kamya presented the petition to the House. The Speaker, Edward ssekandi, forwarded the matter to the defence and internal affairs committee, chaired by Rose Namayanja.

In the handwritten petition, Sam Agupio, Robert Tweyambe, Joseph musasizi, John Arike, James Kabaka and Frank atukunda claimed that the Amnesty Commission officials were among those who coerced them. They also named the officer in charge of the prison and their former co-accused.

Appearing before the committee yesterday, Kamya said various Government emissaries pressured the suspects to apply for amnesty, which she said violated the good intentions of the amnesty Act.

According to the suspects, the emissaries told them that they would never get out of jail unless they applied for amnesty.
