THIS is to answer a querry from Mr. Magezi of Bweyogerere about the growing habit of a palm tree commonly known as Fish tail because its reflets resemble the tail of a fish. Its botanical name is caryota urens. It’s also known as the wine palm or jaggery palm because an alcoholic drink and a sugar are made from its sap.
It reaches up to 18 metres in height and grows in both tropical and warm temperate climates. Its leaves are fairly large and long, hence the tree should be planted in an area with enough room. Palms are safe with no invasive root systems and therefore ideal to small gardens and near buildings.
