KAMPALA City Council (KCC) has threatened to close commercial buildings that default in payment of property tax.

The mayor, Nasser Sebaggala, said KCC would not issue trading licences to any commercial building that defaults in the payment of the tax. He said they were losing a lot of revenue from the defaulters and closing the businesses would ensure that they do not incur losses again.

The mayor made the remarks on Thursday at a consultative meeting held at Hotel International in Muyenga.

Sebaggala noted: “In the past, we had commercial buildings getting trading licences before paying property tax. Now, they will pay the tax before getting their licences”

He cautioned the owners of the buildings against tax evasion and promised to expel them from the city if they are caught.

“Everyone is a stakeholder in developing Kampala. Those who fail to pay taxes as stipulated by KCC have no place in Kampala.”

He explained that revenue from property tax would enable KCC transform Kampala into a “first-class city”.

Sebaggala also urged councillors to get involved in revenue mobilisation to boost the council’s treasury.
