SIR — Recently Prof. Mahmood Mamdani pointed out that Makerere University had become too commercialised and that anyone who had not had anything to do with the university might take it for a joke these days.
The situation is slowly slipping out of hand. After my graduation, it took me about six months to get my academic transcript and three years later, at a time when it is claimed Makerere uses a computerised system, it has taken me more than a week to certify it!
To put a simple stamp on my document is proving to be more difficult than securing an American visa, yet Makerere is very good at charging a fee for anything under the sun! For example, to certify two certificates one must part with sh6,000!
Common sense suggests that this money is supposed to enable the university pay more staff to do the certification, but there is no evidence of such efforts. Makerere owes the public an explanation for such inconvenience.
Why do we pay so much and are treated in such a manner? I urge the Ministry of Education to carry out an independent investigation into the operations of the university.
