A 19-year-old woman suspected to have stolen a two-month-old baby from Kampala, has been arrested in Bushenyi district.
The district criminal chief, Bernard Muhumuza, said Catherine Amumpeire, was found with the baby girl who was stolen from Kazo in Kawempe Division in Kampala.

“We are in touch with the Kawempe Police over the matter,” Muhumuza said. The Bushenyi district officer in charge of children affairs, Margaret Kamiranga, said Amumpeire, from Ntungamo district, is reported to have had a misunderstanding with her husband in Kampala, where they have been staying.

The Police said the husband, who was not identified, reported the theft of the baby.
He claimed that he and Amumpeire were married for four months before they separated.

He said she later turned up with a baby, claiming that it was his.
“She took the baby to her father-in-law pretending that it was hers,” Kamiranga affirmed. She added that after the arrest, Amumpeire claimed that the baby had been neglected by its mother in Kazo, Kampala.

“We are struggling to get milk to feed the baby because the woman cannot breast feed since she is not the mother,” Kamiranga said.

The Police identified the mother of the child as Amina of Kawempe, who had also reported the theft of her baby to Kawempe Police Station.
