By Chris Ocowun UNKNOWN gunmen attacked three vehicles and burnt one in Gulu last week. “We survived because the UPDF rescued us as the attackers were still looting our goods,†said Majid Kafeero, the driver of the Gateway bus. Kafeero is admitted at St. Marys Hospital Lacor in Gulu.
He was transferred here from Nimule Hospital in south Sudan for better treatment.
Kafeero’s left leg is broken, while the other sustained injuries.
He explained that they were ambushed about 3km before the Aruu junction.
He said the attackers first stopped a saloon car attacking and set it ablaze before the bus. The occupants of the car escaped unhurt.
“Eight of the attackers were dressed in torn shorts and green T-shirts. They fired at us and shattered the bus’ windscreen. I was their main target since they wanted the bus to stop,†Kafeero narrated. He added that he tried to drive past them but stopped after his legs were shot.
Kafeero said the gunmen looted a Pajero vehicle, burnt a lorry between Aswa Bridge and Aruu junction, killed a boda-boda cyclist and burnt his motorcycle.
“As soon as the UPDF arrived, the attackers fled, although two were killed and one was captured. A gun was recovered from him.â€
Kafeero explained that no one was killed although eight passengers, including the bus conductor, Abdu Karim, were injured.
He added that a Sudanese soldier was shot as he tried to rescue them.
Karim was rushed to Mulago Hospital in Kampala, while the rest were given first aid by the UPDF before being taken to Nimule Hospital.
Kafeero said the bus is still in Nimule but some passengers continued to Juba by Bule Nile bus.
He thanked the UPDF led by 2nd Lt. D.K. Mukama for their timely assistance.
