MAKERERE University has received a $2.5m (sh4b) grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to construct a modern library. Universities from all over Africa were asked to send in proposals.

“We are delighted to share with you the good news that Makerere has emerged the winner, the best amongst the various university library proposals submitted,” the deputy vice-chancellor in charge of academics, Dr. Lillian tibatemwa, announced last week.

The library, to be built at the university main campus, will have about 580 computers. This will bring the number of students per computer to 42 down from 225.

Tibatemwa said one floor of the new library would be for research. It will have 3,000 textbooks and 400 electronic books.

She explained that special facilities would also be provided for students with disabilities.

“The library will no doubt contribute to Makerere’s reputation as a leading institution in Sub-Saharan Africa, said.
“Other universities in Uganda, especially the public ones, should be able to access these new facilities.”

The grant involves training library staff and students to use the new facilities to do their research.

The two-year project will bring the number of libraries at Makerere to three and thus reducing congestion.

Makerere recently built a library at its cost, which is yet to be opened officially.
Tibwatemwa stressed that this effort had impressed the Carnegie team.

“They came and witnessed the construction of the new library. We did not get any money from donors for that project,” she said. The current library was too small due to an increase in the number of students without a corresponding increase in facilities.
