BRACE yourselves, rally fans, for a mouth-watering spectacle at Lubiri circuit that hosts the Pearl of Africa Uganda rally super special stage today.

This is a must-see as cars will be in constant action for about three hours, giving you a chance to analyse each driver’s skill, style and machine at their optimum.

The adrenaline and tension is almost unbearable for drivers as they maneuver their cars to the limit in a bid to impress the crowd.

From my experience a rally is never won here. In fact, you can only lose it because if you push too hard you may win it by a second or two at the risk of damaging your car or even crashing out.

Every driver knows that a prudent measured approach is sensible. However, once you get into that car and put on the helmet and gloves, the adrenaline takes over and caution is often thrown to the wind. From there, it’s peddle to metal —maximum attack—a race against the clock.

Today’s two stages are hard to predict because a lot can go wrong. I remember a time it rained when all the back-markers had just finished their runs and from being favourite, I suddenly posted the slowest time.

Other factors remaining constant, I fancy either Conrad, Emka, Miyoshi or Ssebuguzi to win by the narrowest of margins.

From 2.30pm rally cars will be flagged off at two minute intervals to tackle the 2.3-km stage twice in a reverse of the starting order. I urge fans to turn up in numbers and to be on your best behaviour. Please don’t drink and drive. May the best man/ woman win.

Charlie Lubega is a 4-time Uganda rally champion and won the Pearl three times. He holds the record for the highest average speed (176-km/h).
