Kabaka urges Buganda to remain calm

KABAKA Ronald Mutebi has urged the public to remain calm while expressing their views. He made the call while celebrating his birthday at Kibuli Mosque on Friday.
Accompanied by the Nabagereka, Sylvia Nagginda, who donned a black hijab (Muslim dress), the Katikkiro, ambassador Ronald Ssendaula and Buganda ministers, the Kabaka said: “To those who know the history of Buganda, Ssekabaka Chwa in his will told Ssekabaka Mutesa I that one time Buganda kingdom will be shaken, and this is the time.
“But I appeal to all my people to remain calm but talk with strength, when expressing dissatisfaction.â€
The Kabaka, who turned 52, later cut a cake which he served to hundreds of people both Muslim and non-Muslim, before proceeding to Prince Kassim Nakibinge’s home for lunch.
Earlier, Katikkiiro Ssendaula extended Mengo’s condolence message to the families that lost their relatives in the chaos on Thursday and asked the government to listen to people’s pleas, to avert a similar situation in future.
Ssendaula said since its inception, Buganda kingdom had been vigorous in protecting the environment and that it would continue.
“In the struggle to protect the environment, the late Semei Kakungulu and others were sent to eastern Uganda to plant trees, which have remained useful to date. To show that the current administration also protects the environment, the Kabaka offered his land in Kyagwe (as an alternative to Mabira) and we promise that we shall continue fighting for the environment,†Ssendaula vowed.
Central Government ministers, opposition party representatives and businesspeople attended the function.
Nakibinge commended the Kabaka for offering land to the Mehta Group for sugar cane growing in a bid to save Mabira forest.
