THE Faculty of Computing and Information Technology at Makerere University has won an African Information Technology Academy award of 2007.

The African Academy Safari 2007 certificate of excellence was presented to the dean, Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba, in Nairobi at Strathmore University.

This was at the Cisco Systems annual instructor conference. It was in recognition of the faculty’s consistent highest enrollment numbers in Africa with over 2,700 graduates and its excellent gender outreach programmes which have attracted over 30% female participation in the Cisco academy programme.

“This is a clear testimony and reconfirms that Makerere University Faculty of Computing and IT is a leader in ICT training both in terms of numbers and quality in Africa,” a statement said.

Last year the faculty was designated an ICT Centre of Excellence for the whole of Eastern Africa by the African Union under the Pan-Africa E-Network initiative.

In the recent past, the faculty has won several international and national ICT awards for quality and prestige.

The Cisco Networking Academy programme is a comprehensive e-learning programme that provides students with Internet technology skills.

The Networking Academy programme delivers web-based content, online assessment, student performance tracking, hands-on labs, instructor training and support and preparation for industry standard certifications.
