Otafiire opposes splitting of Bushenyi district

The minister of local government, Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, has vowed to fight the split of Bushenyi into several districts.

The minister of local government, Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, has vowed to fight the split of Bushenyi into several districts.

Chris Ahimbisibwe reports that Otafiire warned Bushenyi district councillors to stop misleading the people.

“Even if I leave the ministry, I will still oppose it in the cabinet and I will oppose the move in Parliament,” Otafiire vowed. He was on Friday speaking at Bushenyi district women, youth and people with disabilities celebrations held in Mitooma sub-county.

The minister was reacting to comments by the district vice-chairman, Benon Karyeija, that people should be relieved from walking long distances to get services.

“All the four former ministers of local government Amanya Mushega, Richard Nduhura and Prof. Tarsis Kabwegyere are opposed to the split,” Otafiire said.

Recently, the district councillors recommended that the counties of Sheema, Bunyaruguru, Ruhinda and Buhweju be granted district status.

But Otafiire said no county in Bushenyi deserved district status because they are all nearer the district headquarters.
