OVER 360 teachers have been laid off in Arua district in order to improve academic performance. Flavia Droti, the senior education officer, said the affected people include untrained teachers, who have been teaching in primary schools.
“These were mainly S.6 and S.4 leavers who were employed on a trial basis when we faced a shortage of teachers due to the introduction of the UPE programme.â€
Droti explained that some had served since 1996 when enrolment increased. She observed that there are now enough trained teachers for them to recruit.
Droti said the recruits would also best implement the new thematic curriculum because they were trained in its application.
She added that they are relocating teachers from overstaffed to understaffed schools to reduce on the laying off process.
Arua district education department, which still includes the new Nyadri district, has slightly over 4,000 teachers, out of which 400 are untrained.
